Explain the process of breathing in man. | Class 10 Science Chapter Life Processes, Life Processes NCERT Solutions

Question:

Explain the process of breathing in man.

Answer:

Mechanism of breathing involves two processes:-

1. Inhalation or Inspiration: Inspiration is an active process. In this during the intake of fresh air, the muscles contract and lower the diaphragm. This pushes the abdominal viscera downward and enlarges the thoracic cavity from front to back and side to side or lungs get expanded. These muscles contraction pulls the ribs and sternum upward and outward.

2. Exhalation or Expiration: Expiration is normally a passive process which involves relaxation of inspiratory muscles.
In this elimination of foul air occurs. The diaphragm relaxes and raises, thoracic cavities become smaller and lungs get contracted. It brings the sternum and ribs to their original position.
