Horace dandy has carefully planned and stoles every year so that he could get the rare and expensive books which he loved or desperate to collect. Each year he stole enough to last single year and secretly bought the books, through an agent.
A women was standing in the doorway and was speaking to Horace dandy. She was young and pretty and was well dressed up in red. She said that she had come just in time or else her family would have been robbed by Horace. Thus, she pretended to be one of the family members living at shotover grange.
That women was the real culprit who pretended to be a member of the family living at shotover grange. She mislead Horace by believing her that she was member of the family and cleverly took away all the jewels that were kept in the safe.
The answer is, Yes, one does begin to suspect before the end of the story that the lady was not the person, Horace dandy took her to be. She was unusually clam on seeing Horace. Because if someone finds a thief inside their house one is ought to be scared. This seemed strange enough when she did not call the police and instead of that she asked Horace to take out all the jewels from the safe, even if it meant breaking it open and this seemed suspicious. Moreover, it also seemed unlikely that she also forgot the numbers to open the safe. Therefore, it was very evident, before the story ended, that the lady was not the person Horace had taken her to be.
The lady had a confident walk, her voice was firm and her act of touching up, her make-up and the ease with which she picks cigarette from the right place are enough to deceive anybody. Horace was too scared to think properly so he didn’t suspect anything.
Horace dandy was good and respectable-but incompletely honest. This description is suitable for Horace. He was approx fifty years old who used to rob only those who were rich and his intention was to buy such unusual and high-priced books with that money. He did cautious preparation and used to stole only once a year which would be enough for twelve long months. His purpose of buying books was good by doing robbery, however, the fact that he used to steal things to achieve this end represented that he was not, he had his own house. He made locks, had two helpers with him, and was a successful businessman. He only stole money just to buy the books. For a couple of days, he even kept his promise to the lady that he met at shotover grange by not stealing or preparing any robbery.
Horace dandy failed to get enough information about real residents of the house. He was so much occupied with collecting information about house map, wiring and location of valuable things etc. that he forgot one main aspect. Though he was smart enough to know the dog’s actual name but overlooked getting identify of each and every residents of the house. Once he was in the problem then probably his clever mind gave a way to carelessness that leading him to open the safe without wearing gloves.
