A solution of a substance 'X' is used for whitewashing.

   (i)  Name the substance 'X' and write its formula.
   (ii) Write the reaction of the substance 'X' named in (i) above with water.

Answer:

(i)  Substance 'X' is calcium oxide commonly known as Quick Lime.

     Its formula : CaO

 

(ii) Calcium oxide reacts with water and form calcium hydroxide or slaked lime.

        CaO(s)          +          H2O(l)      →      Ca(OH)(aq)

     Calcium oxide               Water              Calcium hydroxide
