Why do fishes die when taken out of water?

Answer:

Fishes can breathe only in the dissolved oxygen through the gills which are richly composed of blood vessels. And they can readily absorb the dissolved oxygen in water. Gills cannot absorb the oxygen on the land because of the gill arches so they die soon after when they are taken out of water.
