मार सर्ध्म का शत्रु था जिसे कामदेव के नाम से भी जाना जाता है मार को लगता था कि बुद्ध उसका राज्य जीतना चाहते है वह बार – बार बुद्ध को डराने लगा ताकि उनका ध्यान भंग हो जाए और वो मोक्ष को प्राप्त करने की विद्या ना हासिल कर पाए I
