Water has been harvested in India since antiquity for the water management and for saving the water in drought conditions. Two advantages associated with water harvesting at the community level are as following:
1. The main purpose of the water management is to hold the water of the surface level and it holds the ground water level as well. Groundwater does not evaporate and spreads to fill the wells and provides moisture the earth and the soil respectively.
2. By holding the water, water harvesting increases the groundwater level and also helps to mitigates (make less severe, serious or painful) floods and droughts.
