What could be the reason for the faster rate of decomposition in the tropics?
Decomposition is the process by which organic compounds are broken down into simple compounds which is brought about and decomposition rates are largely controlled by both biotic and abiotic agencies. Decomposition by biological agents is an oxidative process in which complex energy rich molecules are being broken down by decomposers (bacteria and fungi) eventually into water soluble inorganic nutrients.
Decomposers usually grow faster and decompose organic matter more quickly in warmer climate. Thus, decomposition in the tropical rainforest climate is rapid, relatively little dead organic matter accumulates on the forest bed. The low concentration of some nutrients in the soil of tropical rainforest leads or results from the faster nutrient cycling rate.
