Discuss briefly how a probe is used in molecular diagnostics.
Probe is a single stranded sequence of DNA or RNA, used in molecular diagnostics to find its complementary sequence in the sample genome and for labelling genes or small fragments of genome segment. It is placed near the sample under such conditions which allows probe sequence to hybridize with the complementary sequence. For the labelling of DNA sequence DNA or RNA fragments is used also for genome mapping (method used to identify the locations of genetic markers and the relative distances between genetic markers on genome) and genome sequencing (it spells out the order of every nucleotide in the genome, first genome sequenced was the genome of bacteriophage Φx174).
