Write reactions to justify amphoteric nature of aluminium.

Answer:

A substance is called amphoteric if it displays characteristics of both acids and bases. Aluminium dissolves in both acids and bases, showing its amphoteric behaviour.

(i) 2AI_(s) + 6HCI(aq) → 2AI³⁺_(aq) + 6Cl^-_(aq) + 3H_2(g)

(ii) 2AI_(s) + 2NaOH(aq) + 6H₂O_(l) → 2Na⁺[Al(OH)₄]^-_(aq) + 3H_2(g)
