Explain the role of mouth in digestion of food.
Mouth is a part of the alimentary canal and is bounded by two movable lips and mouth leads into the vestibule.
Role of mouth in the digestion of food are as follows:-
1. Food (solid or liquid material) is taken into the oral cavity through the mouth and the process is known as Ingestion.
2. In the mouth saliva is secreted by the salivary glands which moisten the food and make them available to chew and swallow easily.
3. Mastication process is followed by grinding the teeth from large pieces into smaller particles which then gets mixed with ptyalin.
4. Salivary amylase enzyme that is present in saliva breaks down starch into simple sugar molecules.
