Explain the process of nutrition in Amoeba.
Amoeba is a unicellular organism which has the ability to alter its shape by extending pseudopods. They show a holozoic type of nutrition in which the food is taken in by the entire surface. But when the organism becomes complex, special parts of the body get developed to perform different functions. Holozoic nutrition involves following steps:
1. Ingestion:- They take in food by using a temporary finger-like extension of the cell surface called pseudopodia, which fuses over the food particles by forming food vacuole.
2. Digestion:- Inside the food vacuole, complex substances get broken down into the simpler ones by enzymes for the digestion which then diffuses into the water.
3. Absorption:- After the digestion process, nutrients enter into the cytoplasm through the osmosis process.
4. Assimilation:- These nutrients are utilized by the cells for performing various activities.
5. Egestion:- The remaining undigested material is moved to the surface of the cell and thrown out.
