What is an algal bloom?

Answer:

When the water body acquires large amount of nutrients like phosphorus and nitrates and this accelerate the growth of algae, but the excessive growth of nutrients produces algal mat on the water surface which is known as algal bloom (through which oxygen depletion occurs), and the increased productivity known as Eutrophication.
