Is it true that if the dissolved oxygen | Class 12 Biology Chapter Environmental Issues, Environmental Issues NCERT Solutions

Question:

Is it true that if the dissolved oxygen level drops to zero, the water will become septic. Give an example which could lower the dissolved oxygen content of an aquatic body.

Answer:

Yes it is true that if the dissolved oxygen level drops to zero, the water will then become septic. Organic pollutants like herbicides, pesticides etc. originates from sewage, industrial effluents and farm wastes and when these organic pollutants loaded into the water body, they are gradually biodegraded by the aerobic bacteria. They consume high amount of dissolved oxygen and this depleting dissolved oxygen (DO) leads to death in aquatic biota.

Note:- Oxygen is measured in its dissolved form as the dissolved oxygen (DO) and will be considered as the primary indicator of the water quality.
