In a sea shore, the benthic animals live in sandy, muddy and rocky substrata and accordingly developed the following adaptations.
a. Burrowing
b. Building cubes
c. Holdfasts / peduncle
Find the suitable substratum against each adaptation.

Answer:

Benthos are the bottom dwelling organisms which lives in the benthic zone which is present at the bottom of the lake, ocean etc.

  1. In sea shore, organisms like crabs, lobsters etc. they make burrows or tunnels, lives in the sandy substrata for the protection from the predators for not being captured.
  2. Organisms like zooplanktons adapt themselves in the building cubes which helps in the feeding mechanism that lives in the muddy substrata.
  3. Coelenterates (sponges) shows the holdfasts/peduncle adaptation which attaches themselves to the rocky substratum for the growth.
