Velocity versus time graph of a ball of | Class 9 Science Chapter Force and Laws of Motion, Force and Laws of Motion NCERT Solutions

Question:

Velocity versus time graph of a ball of mass 50 g rolling on a concrete floor is shown in Fig. 9.1. Calculate the acceleration and frictional force of the floor on the ball.

Answer:

Given, mass (m) = 50 g = 50/1000 = 0.05 kg
Initial velocity, u = 80 m/s
Final velocity, v = 0 m/s
Time taken, t = 8 sec
From first equation of motion, v = u + at
a = (v - u) / t
a = ( 0 - 80 ) / 8 = - 10 m/s^2
Now frictional force of the floor on the ball ( F ) = ma = 0.05 x (-10) = - 0.5 N                       (negative sign shows against the direction of motion)
