Role of Ca2+ ions in muscle contraction are:

  1. Sarcoplasmic reticulum releases stored Ca2+ which binds into the specific sites of troponin component of thin filament.
  2. Due to this binding F- actin molecule become exposed and the confirmation of the troponin molecule changed.
  3. The active sites of F- actin are specific to myosin head which have ATP activity depend on magnesium ion.
  4. During the relaxation of muscle calcium ion is pumped back to the sarcoplasmic reticulum and causes the active site of myosin masking and the muscles get relaxed.
