Question:

How is the intracellular levels of ions maintained higher than extracellular levels in animal cells?

Answer:

Cells have ATP powered pumps like Na⁺ ^-K + - pump where 3Na²⁺ is sent out in exchange of 2K⁺ions. Thus increasing the K⁺ions level in the intracellular region. In this way through the pumps, ion concentration is maintaining higher than extracellular levels in animal cells.
