Why do all the fresh water organisms hav | Class 12 Biology Chapter Organisms and Population, Organisms and Population NCERT Solutions

Question:

Why do all the fresh water organisms have contractile vacuoles whereas majority of marine organisms lack them?

Answer:

In the freshwater organisms, contractile vacuoles (expels the excess water outside the cell by the contraction which is known as osmoregulation) are present which helps in the regulation of quantity of water inside the cell. But in marine organisms, there is no need of water removal due to hypotonic concentration of solutes or osmoregulation will not occur, thus they are absent in marine organisms.
