List the characteristics of cork. How are they formed? Mention their role.

Answer:

Characteristics of cork are as follows:

  1. Cells of cork are non living (dead).
  2. These cells are closely packed and do not have intercellular spaces.
  3. Their cell wall has deposition of chemical substances i.e suberin.
  4. It is multilayered.
  5. Cork is resistant to gases and water due to suberin deposition.

As plants grow older, a strip of secondary meristem replaces the epidermis of the stem. Cells cut on the outer side by this meristem are called cork.

Role of cork is as follows:

  1. It protects the internal tissues from mechanical injury and from parasitic attack.
  2. It helps in gaseous exchange through lenticels.
  3. It gives mechanical support to plants.
