Diatoms are also called as ‘pearls of ocean’, why? What is diatomaceous earth?

Answer:

Diatoms are chief procedure of ocean and marine water thus they are known as ‘Pearls of Ocean’.

The cell wall of Diatoms are made of cellulose in which Silica particles are embedded in at various places. Their cell wall have silica in very large quantity, due to this reason cell wall appears hard. Cell wall do not get destroyed after their death, so at the bottom of the sea, accumulation of large deposits of diatoms are formed that forms a siliceous covering is known as “Diatomaceous Earth” or “Diatomite” or “Keiselgurh”.
