The heterosporous pteridophytes show certain characteristics, which are precursor to the seed habit in gymnosperms. Explain.

Answer:

In majority of Pteridophytes, all the spores are similar, they are known as homosporous. But genera like Selaginella. Sylvania, Marsilea etc. produce different kind of spores that are microspores and megaspores. These are known as Heteroporous.

The Heterosporous Pteridophytes show certain characteristics that are precursor to the seed habit in Gymnosperms are as follows:

  1. One of such characteristic is the development of embryo inside the female gametophyte.
  2. Evolutionary Heterospory
  3. The decrease in the number of Megaspore to one.
