Give the biochemical composition of plasma membrane. How are lipid molecules arranged in the membrane?
 

Answer:

Proteins, Lipids, Water and Carbohydrates forms plasma membrane. The ratio of lipids and proteins varies considerably in different types of cells. The major lipids are phospholipids that are arranged in a bilayer. In Human beings, proportion of cell membrane components are as follows:

  1. Lipids (phospholipids, glycolipids, cholesterol): 20- 79%
  2. Proteins: 20- 70 %
  3. Oligosaccharides: 1.5%
  4. Water: 20%
