At a certain temperature and total pressure of 105 Pa, iodine vapour contains 40% by volume of I atoms
I2(g) ↔ 2l (g)
Calculate Kp for the equilibrium.
Partial pressure of I atoms,
pI = ptotal x 40/100
= 105 x 40/100
= 4 x 104 Pa
Partial pressure of I2 molecules,
pI 2 = ptotal x 60/100
= 105 x 60/100
= 6 x 104 Pa
Now, for the given reaction,
Kp = (pI)2 / pI2
= (4 x 104 ) 2 Pa2 / 6 x 104 Pa
= 2.67 x 104 Pa
