Briefly describe the cell theory.
Cell theory was formulated by Schleiden and Schwann together (1838- 39) in their paper “Microscopic investigation on the Similarities of Structure and Growth in Animals and Plants”. They said that bodies of Plants and animals are made up of cells. Cells are the structural and functional units of life. All the cells are basically alike in structure and metabolic activities. However this theory did not explain as to how new cells were formed.
The modern cell theory by Rudolf Virchow (1855) explained that cells divide and new cells are formed from pre-existing. Cells and all living organisms are composed of cells and products of cells.
