Algae are known to reproduce asexually by variety of spores under different environmental conditions. Name these spores and the conditions under which they are produced.

Answer:

Algae reproduce asexually by various spores or propagules without involving the formation and union of gametes. The most common spores that are used, zoospores.

Types of asexual reproduction:

  1. Zoospores: are motile and formed in favourable condition.
  2. Aplanospores: are non- motile and produced under unfavourable condition.
  3. Hypnospores: are thick- walled spores and formed under favourable condition.
  4. Akinete: are from the vegetative cells, thick cell wall and produced under unfavourable condition.
  5. Hormogonia: have gelatinous covering and formed in condition of drought.
