Make a list of algae and fungi that have commercial value as source of food, chemicals, medicines and fodder.

Answer:

A. Importance of Algae:

  1. Chlorella (has large amount of protein), Laminaria, Porphyra are used as food.
  2. Sargassum algae produce large amount of water holding substances that are used commercially.
  3. Agar is used in manufacture of ice- cream and jellies. Agar- Agar colloid is obtained from Gelidium and Gracilaria. It is used to prepare culture media.
  4. Bromine is obtained from red algae polysiphonia. Macrocystis is the source of Potash. Luminaria and Fucus are the source of Iodine.
  5. Chondrus is also known as Irish moss which is used as fodder.

B. Economic Importance of Fungi:

  1. The fungus Penicillium notatum is used for producing antibiotic Penicillin. Penicillium griseofulvum is used for Griseofulvin antibiotic.
  2. Fermentation is only possible because of yeast.
  3. Some varieties of Agaricus are used as food in many countries. Morchella is an edible fungus.
