Rough E.R.

  1. They contains ribosomes attached on its cytoplasmic surface.
  2. They are frequently observed in the cells actively involved in protein synthesis and secretion of enzymes.
  3. They are mainly formed of cisternae and few tubules.
  4. Contains ribophorins for binding ribosomes.
  5. Arise from the nuclear envelope by outfolding.

 

Smooth E.R.

  1. They have no ribosomes attached on it.
  2. They help in synthesis of glycogen and lipids.
  3. They are formed mainly by vesicles and tubules.
  4. Ribophorins are absent.
  5. Arise from the RER by detachment of ribosomes.
