Upstream processing: It involves the identification of material which can be transformed for making the final product. For example: for making Bt cotton, the gene is extracted for insecticide toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis. And then this gene is introduced into the cotton.

Downstream processing: When the foreign gene product is synthesized then it is collected from the bioreactor and get forward for its separation and purification.
