Taking examples under each category, discuss upstream and downstream processing.
Upstream processing: It involves the identification of material which can be transformed for making the final product. For example: for making Bt cotton, the gene is extracted for insecticide toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis. And then this gene is introduced into the cotton.
Downstream processing: When the foreign gene product is synthesized then it is collected from the bioreactor and get forward for its separation and purification. Now, this product is ready for the sale or marketing. After the biosynthesis process this collection of product, separation and purification is known as downstream processing. For example: fermentation process, purification of alcohol through the distillation.
