Name a microbe used for statin production. How do statins lower blood cholesterol level?

Answer:

Stains are bioactive molecules, produced by the yeast Monascus purpureus. These bioactive molecules have been commercialized as the blood- cholesterol lowering agents. It acts through the competitively inhabiting enzyme which is responsible for the synthesis of cholesterol.
