Apart from chlorophyll, algae have several other pigments in their chloroplast. What pigments are found in blue-green, red and brown algae that are responsible for their characteristic colours?
The classification of algae is mostly based on the photosynthetic pigments. Specific pigments are define below:
Blue- green algae: major pigment is phycoerythrin beside chlorophyll a and b.
Brown algae: Fucoxanthin amount is more in brown algae due to which algae appears brown in colour.
Major pigments are β- carotenoids and Xanthophyll (brown coloured Fucoxanthin) beside chlorophyll ‘a’ and ‘c’.
Red algae: Also known as Rhodophyceae. Cell walls are made up of cellulose and pectin. They form lime stone and coral reefs.
They contains β- carotenoids and phycobilins- r phycoerythrin (red coloured); and chlorophyll ‘a’ and ‘d’.
